Me vidhiyata sinhala liyanakota, podi prashna keepayak mathu wenawa.

Ok. Screw this. Lots of my friends write like this over IM and email, but I simply can't contort my brain like that for long :) Sorry.

The problem is that you may spell a certain phoneme (a syllable, if you like) in one way, I might do it using something else. English isn't a phonetic language, you see. (ie: "put" and "but" are pronounced entirely differently. How and when the pronunciation changes is not encoded in the script itself). So we need a standard means of representing even the most basic of sounds. Take the first 16 vowels (swara).
I would go
"ah", "aah", "ay" (like ant), ... there aren't nice equivalents, you see :)

So, why not point people to a proper transliteration scheme (plug: use samanala) and use that yourself ? Works out quite well consistency wise, but with a small learning curve attached.

By the way, Chandare, you made a mistake by divulging quite a few details about yourself elsewhere on the internet. Fear the mighty Google ;)

damn you Chandare, now I actually have to work on a font without just talking.

Some problems I'm having are with muh vs ma. When you write phonetically it the both come out as ma. I'm wondering how to represent muh or buh, which is the default state.

Also long vs short vowels. I was thinking i and í. Dunno.

Hi everyone I am really interested in this Sinhalese thing :) To tell the truth I've been working on a romanization scheme for Sinhalese as well which I would like to share with you guys:

It utilizes all the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet to represent the basic sounds in Sinhalese except for these four letters: x, v, z, q

In this romanization scheme,

z = the hard D in Sinhalese (as in "daDayama" - the hunt), d = the soft d in Sinhalese (as in "dahama" - the doctrine)

x = the hard T in Sinhalese (as in "maTa" - to me), t = the soft t in Sinhalese (as in "tahanam" - prohibited).

c = the chayanne in Sinhalese (as in paawichchi - to use).

ae = a separate letter representing the Sinhalese ae as in "aetula" - inside, or "aehuwaa" - I heard)

: = an elongation

These scheme needs no diacritics, it only requires a "normal" keyboard with the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet.

I took the liberty of putting Mahangu's post in this scheme:

ow, ma:t mehema haema da:ma wage liyanawa:. Instant Messaging pa:wicci karanakoxa kohomat mehema liyawenawa:. mama hitanne, maat sinhala blog ekak paxanganna o:ne. Ekko blogger hari blogsome hari pa:wicci karala: karanna one.

ape: raxaxa avenika temavan gaena liyanna hondama ba:sha:va itin sinhala ne:da? me:ka apixa handunwa dunnaxa stuti, chandare. passe hamba wemu.

-- q or v can be substituted for the : elongation

Any thoughts? :)

Hi Anonymous,
Interesting idea. Just a few observations:

The problem with your choice of character for elongation is that no one writing Sinhala can now use the colon char anymore, since it has a double use as an elongation character. It would be difficult to determine the context in which a naturally occuring punctuation character is being used, if we employ it in standard text. Obviously, this extends to any punctuation char that might be used in place of :. Using q or v for elongations has a slight awkwardness that I mention next ...

The other thing is that some of the character placements aren't that intuitive, at least to me. I realize that once I become comfortable with this or any other scheme, it will be easier.. Take for instance:
"ratata" vs "raxaxa". As a person who recognizes the English sound for "x", I wouldn't know what word you were trying to say without careful inspection of the surrounding context.. and that's a bit awkward. What's wrong with using "t" and "th" to distinguish the two sounds ? Sinhala does have almost twice the number of chars in the alphabet, so it stands to reason that a 26 char alphabet is not going to represent all the sounds with one char each.

And this is not aimed at you specifically, it's a general criticism of most transliteration schemes :) including yours.

Unfortunately there are no dictionaries for this.
Some bloggers in Kottu.org decided on a font which can be typed phonetcally which is quite nice (created by indi)
For the translation check the next comment

....thawa dawas daha atai
"eighteen more days"
and
also mam dhan enna jayanathlaga podi akkalaga gadara.filme akka balanawa
"I'm currently in Jayanth's elder sister's house.Elder sister is watiching the film(films?movies?)"

contextually I made some assumptions
1. enna = inna
2.Filme=film
Also sinhalese have highly complex family naming traditions. I thought it would be better to explain "podi akka"
Podi=younger or small
Akka = elder sister.
Podi Akka is the youngest of the several elder sisters.
